Review: Malouf Zoned Dough Pillows with Aromatherapy Spray Will Take Your Sleep Quality to the Next Level

Review: Malouf Zoned Dough Pillows with Aromatherapy Spray Will Take Your Sleep Quality to the Next Level

You know that saying, ‘if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it?’ On the flip-side of that, sometimes you don’t realise how something you use every day actually really needs to be changed, until you experience something better.  I’m talking of course, about my pillow. Considering how much time we spend in our bed, (around 8 hours every day if you’re lucky), making sure it is comfortable and conducive to relaxation is really important.

When we talk about ensuring good posture and spinal alignment for sleep, people generally assume this comes down to the quality of your mattress. But the truth is, old and worn-out pillows can also have a negative impact too.

I was recently gifted 2 new pillows, and I hadn’t even realised how in dire need I was of replacing my pillows until I experienced the Malouf Zoned pillows from Sleepy’s. They are next-level luxury and comfort. Having experienced poor sleep for a number of years in my 30’s, mostly difficulty getting to sleep, I know exactly how impactful lack of sleep can be on your mood, your energy levels, your overall feeling of wellbeing and even your memory. Sick of feeling awful all the time, for the past couple of years I have really put effort into creating a bedtime routine to improve my sleep habits, including limiting my caffeine intake, drinking herbal ‘sleep’ tea in the evening, going to bed when I feel tired (not overtired), meditating and not using my mobile phone in bed. As a result, my sleep has improved immensely. I’m asleep most nights now by 9pm and up at 5am, with energy to workout with friends before getting my kids up for school and starting my workday. I honestly thought I was getting the best sleep until I recently started sleeping on the Malouf pillows, and realised that not only am I sleeping like a metaphorical log, the tension that I usually carry in my shoulders and had attributed to stress, has actually gone too.

So, What Makes the Malouf Dough Zoned Pillows Special?

As soon as the Malouf pillows arrived, I could tell they were something special.

Aromatherapy Infused

The Aromatherapy Zoned Dough Pillows for side and back sleepers are available with chamomile, lavender or peppermint oil infused into the pillow. I received the chamomile – and it’s my current favourite. Chamomile is known to soothe, calm, improve mood, and relieve tension, and I find it really effective at helping me relax at the end of the day. The pillows also come with a 2ml spritzer allowing you to refresh the aroma every 6 months or as needed.

I’m generally a side sleeper, though occasionally I’ll sleep on my back (particularly if I have headphones on listening to a guided meditation) so I was really intrigued by the Shoulder Zoned Pillow for side sleepers. This one comes in chamomile, lavender, peppermint, and also a bamboo charcoal which is great for asthma and allergy sufferers.

The peppermint scent is known to help with respiratory function, ease tension headaches and calm stress and I have really been enjoying sinking into a pillow that releases a calming scent without being too strong or overpowering.

And the shoulder cut out? Where have you been all my life? Of course, if you’re a tummy sleeper, the chances are it’s not going to work for you. But if your sleep position of choice is on your side, it’s definitely worth giving this pillow a try. As I mentioned previously, I’ve noticed that I haven’t complained of a stiff neck or tension in my shoulders since ditching my old pillows and switching to these. Are the two things related? I really believe so.

Proprietary Dough Formula

All memory foam is not created equal. Different formulas result in distinctly different feels. The Malouf Dough memory foam is deeply cushioning and moulds to your shape to relieve tension that inhibits sleep.

The Zoned Technology

You’ll be forgiven if you thought that the holes in the pillow were to facilitate the release of the aromatherapy oil. (Just me?)

These exclusive ergonomic designed pillows feature zones of precisely cut columns that create soft and firm regions within the pillow. The central columns are larger to provide an ideal cushion for your head and the holes on the outside are smaller to keep your neck aligned and provide optimal support.

I love that it specifically moulds to provide support where you need it most.

The Silky Tencell Lycell Cover

The pillow comes with a silky, smooth cover made of lyocell mesh fabric. Its extra breathable meaning not only does it allow the release of the natural oil scent, it also has an extra cooling effect. That’s right, no more flipping your pillow in the middle of the night so that you can sleep on the cool side!

Conclusion

Prior to owning a Malouf Dough pillow, the most I’d ever personally spent on a pillow was about $80 about 6 years ago. So, I’m going to be honest and say that I was a little taken aback to learn that the Malouf pillows cost $199 each. However, that was before they arrived and I was able to experience the difference for myself.

Considering the amount of time we spend in bed, and how the quality of sleep we get each night directly effects both our physical and mental health, I think making your bed a special place of comfort and luxury is a wise way to spend your money.

I think the addition of aromatherapy to the Malouf pillow is innovative and effective. Placing your head on the pillow, and having that luxurious, plush feeling along with the calming scent is the perfect way to end the day. I also love that they are always exactly the right shape – no plumping or fluffing required!

I’m currently switching from one to the other from one week to the next, unable to choose which is my absolute favourite. The shoulder cut out is a stand-out feature on one, but the chamomile scent on the other is amazing. That’s not to say the peppermint scent isn’t lovely, or that the ordinary shaped pillow isn’t the most comfortable ordinary shaped pillow I’ve ever slept on. But, if you are going to try one for yourself, and you are a side sleeper I’d recommend the chamomile shoulder zoned pillow. With those two combined though, I might not ever want to get out of bed again!
