New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden Speaks Honestly About The Challenges Of Being A Working Mum!

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden has spoken honestly about the challenges she faces being a working mum. In an interview with the Australian Women’s Weekly the PM says the key is not to pretend everything is easy.

“I’m very open about the things that I find tough about being a mum and being in this role,” she said. Giving birth to daughter Neve just eight months into her role as NZ PM couldn’t of been easy but if anyone was going to do it it was Arden! The challenge gave Arden an understanding of how tough working mums have it- in fact all mums in general.

It gives me a huge amount of empathy for all mums, whether you’re a working mum or a stay-at-home mum … especially if you’re a solo mum,” she said.

But perhaps the most important message the PM gave was that it’s important not to expect perfection when it comes to parenting. There is no such thing nor should we strive for it. A message she believes is particularly important for the next generation to hear.

“If we’re thinking about what we can do for the next generation, we can show them that you don’t have to be perfect,” she said.

When speaking of her 18 month old daughter with partner Clarke Gauford she says she’s exactly like him.

“It’s one of the things I’ve found most rewardin about this year is that she’s just developed … she’s her own little person,” she said. “And that’s really lovely; you see snippets of who she’s going to be, and she’s curious and she’s funny.”

In fact the PM jokes that little Neve hardly needs her except for a nappy change which ”even then, she could take it or leave it.” Sounding like a typical doting mum, Arden says Neve is quite the attention seeker and loves to perform in front of people.

”She’ll try and play a starring role. She’ll make herself known to people – one of her favourite words is ‘hi’,” Ms Adern said.

“And if you don’t say hi, she just gets louder and louder and louder.”

This is the first baby for the couple, who have yet to tie the knot, but by the looks of things they are both naturals at this parenting thing!
