Australia to Compete in this Year’s Eurovision Song Contest
Organisers of the popular annual Eurovision Song Contest, have invited Australia to compete as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations.
“SBS has been broadcasting Eurovision for 30 years and we have seen how Australians’ love of the song contest has grown during these years,” managing director Michael Ebeid said.
Due to the ‘one-off nature’, and to ensure that Australia’s participation doesn’t reduce the chances of any other semi-finalists making it through, Australia will be given a wildcard to the final, held in Vienna Austria on 23rd May 2015.
However Australia will be able to vote in both the semi-finals and the grand final – with the possibility of allowing the Australian public a 50% stake in the Australian vote being explored.
Traditionally, the winning country hosts the show the following year, however, in the event that Australia should win, next year’s event will be held in a European city – but Australia will be allowed to participate and defend the title.
The Australian song entry is yet to be selected.
