Latest Optical Illusion Divides The Internet. Not Everyone Can See It!

Latest Optical Illusion Divides The Internet. Not Everyone Can See It!

At first glance this optical illusion may just look like a close up of a cupcake, but amongst it is a tiny black dot. Once you focus on it for 10 seconds something really weird happens. Problem is, not everyone can see it. Can you?

Posted by Twitter user Amanita, the image is made of lots of colourful splotches with a single black dot in the centre. The background is beige and Amanita says that if you “stare at the black dot for 10 seconds the colours will disappear.”

What should effectively happen, is your eyes should only see beige, not any other colour. Try it…

Did it work for you or have you just been left with really sore eyes? The optical illusion has been tested by a whole bunch of people on social media in the past few days and the results have been varied.

“Interesting. They disappear when I lean in a bit closer to my screen and focus on the dot. When I’m just at my regular distance (sitting comfortably at my desk) the colours in the bottom half of the image disappear, but not the ones in the top half,” shared one user.

“Didn’t work for me.. Maybe cause I kept thinking I was staring into a birthday cake-flavoured cupcake,” said another.

“No….. the colours don’t disappear, no matter how long you stare at them,” wrote a third commenter.

So how did this work? Amanita shared an explanation for the illusion, writing, “The eye can only see properly in a small area of the retina, so to see the whole image, we must move the eye and then the brain builds the image. When we force the eye to state at the dot, the brain builds the image with what it sees around it, which is just beige.”

Still, there were a LOT of people who thought for sure they needed glasses and began questioning their poor eye sight.

“Colours ain’t disappearing… Does that imply I have a sight problem?” questioned one user.

However one person gave a rather interesting explanation. They said that the problem may be people’s “poor attention” rather than their “poor eyesight. Your mind is wandering, which makes your eyes perform very slight movements.  You have to be 100 per cent absorbed in the black dot,” they explained.

Hmmmm….interesting. So maybe those of you who can’t get it to work are just thinking about what you’re having for dinner! Haha!
