Aiper Scuba X1 Pro Max Review: The Robotic Pool Cleaner That Handles Surface Skimming Too
Can the Aiper Scuba X1 Pro Max Really Do It All?
When we moved from Victoria to the Gold Coast 7 years ago, one of the things we promised the kids (to soften the blow of leaving their school and friends) was that we’d buy a house with a pool. Fast forward to now, and I feel very fortunate to have a pool (especially during the humid summer months), but there are two niggling frustrations that come with it. The first one is that our teens always invite their friends over for a swim, which I’m perfectly fine with…except for the fact that no one ever seems to bring their own towel, so muggins here ends up with a never-ending pile of wet towel and extra laundry. The second is dog hair. One of our rescue dogs is completely pool mad. If he so much as sees someone reaching for their swimmers, he’s running excited laps around the pool and launching himself into the deep end with them. It’s great fun for him and us, but Kelpie’s shed A LOT of hair, and rather than sinking and getting picked up by the pool cleaner eventually, it all ends up floating on the surface of the pool.
Not only could you see the hairs on the top when the sunlight caught it, I also read somewhere that a single dog can introduce as much organic contamination as up to 50 human swimmers. Not just that, but because pet hair, oils and dander behave differently in water compared to standard debris that sinks, they tend to cling to the waterline and stick to surfaces meaning they circulate for longer and are harder to fully remove through standard cleaning alone. We did try one of those pool socks that you put over the filter to try to catch the hair that way, but it got sucked into the system, so we never tried that again!

So, when I heard about the new Aiper Scuba X1 Pro Max cordless pool cleaner, that not only cleans the floors, walls and waterline but also skims the surface, I was only too willing to put my hand up to put it through its paces and see if it lives up to the hype.
Disclosure: I was gifted this pool cleaner for the purpose of providing an honest review so that our community can judge whether it is right for them. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.

Aiper Scuba X1 Pro Max: Built for Larger, High-Use Family Pools
What immediately sets this pool cleaner apart from many traditional robotic pool cleaners is its ability, as I mentioned, to not just clean the floor and walls, but also the surface and waterline.
For us, that surface and waterline cleaning is an invaluable feature. Having a cleaner that actively targets those areas as well as the floors and walls makes the whole pool feel properly clean, rather than just “clean underneath”.

The Aiper Scuba X1 Pro Max is designed for pools up to 300㎡, so it’s also suited to larger family pools that need regular maintenance rather than the occasional once-over. It uses a dual-jet system powered by 9 motors, along with dual silicon rollers and 9 brushes to clean the floors, walls and waterline, which gives it strong suction and surprisingly controlled movement as it works its way around the pool.
I also liked that it offers 7 different cleaning modes because, realistically, not every pool clean is the same. Sometimes the pool just needs a quick tidy after everyday use, while other times — like after a weekend of kids, dogs and half the neighbourhood swimming in it — it needs something a bit more thorough. The different modes make it feel more adaptable to real family life instead of a one-size-fits-all clean.

The robot itself feels very solid and premium straight out of the box, which gives you confidence in its durability. Charging time is around 4–5 hours, with up to 5 hours of battery life available when running in Eco mode, which is enough to comfortably handle larger pools without needing constant recharging. That said, once it’s full of water it can weigh close to 20kg, so it’s definitely worth thinking about who in the household will be lifting it out of the pool and carrying it back to the charging dock.

Smarter Detection and More Thorough Cleaning
At the heart of the system is Aiper’s OmniSense+™ 2.0 ultrasonic sensing technology, supported by 40 sensors and FlexiPath™ 2.0 navigation, combined with quad-core processing, which allows the cleaner to map out the pool and adjust its movement depending on the shape. Whether your pool is rectangular, curved or a more freeform design, it cleans in a far more methodical way rather than simply moving around at random.
That smarter navigation is paired with 360° scanning and mapping, which continuously reads the environment as it works to help improve coverage and reduce those frustrating missed patches that some robotic cleaners can leave behind.

The top-loading 5L debris basket and ultra-fine filtration also impressed me because it captures debris particles down to 3μm, allowing it to trap not just leaves and larger debris, but also microscopic pollutants like fine sand, dust and even algae. You can also choose to use it with or without the fine micro-mesh lining depending on the type of debris you’re dealing with. For heavier debris after storms or heavy rain, removing the lining allows for easier collection, while using the ultra-fine mesh helps achieve that crystal-clear water finish. Those finer particles are often what leave pool water looking a little dull over time, so it was nice to see the water looking noticeably fresher and clearer after running a cleaning cycle.

The Aiper Scuba X1 Pro Max Waterline, Walls and Surface Performance
Between sunscreen, body oils, dog hair and general debris, build-up around the waterline can appear surprisingly quickly, especially during summer when the pool is in constant use. The Scuba X1 Pro Max uses stabilised horizontal scrubbing along the waterline, while also cleaning the walls and floor at the same time, which helps keep the pool looking fresh and well cared for.
One feature I found genuinely useful is the app integration, which sends a notification when the cleaning cycle is complete and prompts you to go and retrieve the robot. In most cases it will park itself near the edge of the pool ready to be lifted out, but if you’re not home for a few hours afterwards — particularly on a windy day — it can drift back out toward the middle of the pool. It’s not a major issue though, as it also comes with a retrieval hook, so you’re not left trying to fish it out by hand.
I also really liked the precision surface retrieval feature because, unlike other robotic cleaners that need to be pulled up from the bottom of the pool, this one comes back up to the surface at the end of its cycle. It then sits ready for collection, which makes the whole retrieval process feel a lot more straightforward.
Smart Control and Connectivity
The Aiper Scuba X1 Pro Max integrates smart control through the Aiper app, allowing users to view battery status, select cleaning modes, monitor cycle information and receive automatic app updates that improve functionality over time. It makes the cleaner feel more like a connected device rather than a fixed-function appliance, with updates and refinements delivered post-purchase.
That said, once the robot is underwater it does lose Wi-Fi connection, which means you can’t actively adjust settings mid-cycle from the app. If that’s something you do want more control over, there is an optional HydroComm Pro accessory available that extends connectivity underwater and allows for more real-time interaction, including changing modes while it’s running. For me personally, it hasn’t been an issue. I tend to use the app fairly sparingly anyway (there are enough of them in my life), and usually just set the cleaning mode directly on the unit itself before it starts.

Final Thoughts
The Aiper Scuba X1 Pro Max feels very well suited to busy family pools like ours — the kind with kids constantly in and out, extra swimmers on weekends, pets treating the pool like their personal playground, and plenty of day-to-day debris that comes with real life.
Between the strong dual-jet suction, smart 360° mapping, ultra-fine filtration, waterline and surface cleaning, and the flexibility of multiple cleaning modes, it does a very impressive job of taking over a task that would otherwise require a lot more ongoing effort and attention.
Of course, being cordless, it’s not completely hands-off. It still needs to be charged, placed into the pool, lifted back out afterwards and have the filter basket emptied and cleaned. But overall, it makes ongoing pool care feel far more manageable and much less time-consuming.
For us, the biggest standout was the surface skimming capability because it tackled one of the main frustrations we deal with regularly — floating dog hair and fine debris sitting on the surface long after everyone has finished swimming. The pool also looked and felt noticeably fresher overall, especially once you see what the ultra-fine mesh basket actually catches. It definitely gives you confidence that you’re not just keeping the pool looking good, but also helping maintain a healthier swimming environment for everyone using it.
Priced at $3,499.99 (although you can sometimes catch it on sale), it’s positioned at the premium end of the market, so it won’t be the right fit for every budget. But for larger, high-use pools where debris, pet hair and constant swimming are an everyday reality, the amount of time and effort it saves does make the investment easier to justify.
